The Chicago Bears don’t seem completely content with their current group of running backs as the deadline to finalize the 53-man roster approaches. They have until August 26 to make roster decisions before getting ready to face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1.
There have been uncertainties surrounding the backfield since training camp began. D’Andre Swift is coming off a disappointing 2024 season, Roschon Johnson doesn’t appear to be a long-term answer, and rookie Kyle Monangai—drafted in the seventh round—faces a steep adjustment to the NFL level.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC, the Bears recently evaluated a few running backs: Royce Freeman, undrafted rookie Kylin James, and Dillon Johnson, who was previously on the Panthers’ practice squad.
Among them, Freeman is the only one with meaningful NFL experience. A former third-round pick by the Broncos in 2018, Freeman has played in 79 games, starting nine, with 471 carries for 1,472 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was briefly with the Bears’ practice squad late in 2024 before joining the Rams’ practice squad in January. His most recent game action came in 2023 with the Rams, where he recorded 319 rushing yards and two touchdowns in 14 games.
The Bears’ workouts suggest they’re actively looking to reinforce the position. One name reportedly on the trade block is Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr., and more players may become available once teams cut down to 53-man rosters. However, those late additions might not offer the immediate impact the Bears are looking for early in the season.
