Lions Lose Young Corner Before He Ever Arrives — Rakestraw’s Season Over Before It Starts….

Ennis Rakestraw is officially out for the 2025 season. The second-year cornerback was already expected to miss time, but the Lions confirmed that by placing him on injured reserve Thursday.
Players placed on IR during the offseason can’t return unless released with an injury settlement—which isn’t going to happen for Rakestraw, given his status as a 2024 second-round pick. After a rookie year that served more as a developmental “redshirt” season, this latest setback is a tough blow for both the player and the team.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently confirmed that Rakestraw was dealing with a shoulder injury, which required surgery on Thursday. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the procedure was successful, but that offers little comfort as Rakestraw will miss the entire season while rehabbing.
The 23-year-old appeared in only eight games last season, playing 141 snaps. He wasn’t projected to start this year, with Terrion Arnold and Amik Robertson expected to lead the outside, and D.J. Reed added in free agency to replace Carlton Davis. Still, Rakestraw was lined up for a backup role and could’ve stepped in if injuries hit. With him sidelined, Detroit’s depth at corner will be tested once again.
The team has already brought in Luq Barcoo and D.J. Miller for added depth. Veteran Avonte Maddox remains an option in the slot or at safety, while Rock Ya-Sin—typically a corner—is being experimented with at safety, though Rakestraw’s absence could shift that plan.
With nearly $48 million in cap space, the Lions have the financial flexibility to add a veteran cornerback. Free agents like Asante Samuel Jr., Rasul Douglas, and Kendall Fuller remain available, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Detroit explore a one-year deal with one of them or another experienced cover man on the market.
